The brain benefits from just 10 minutes of running

Running should be prescribed for mental health, according to research by Japanese scientists




  • Running is the most natural sport for man. Since the hominids began to stand on their legs, an evolution began that has contributed to the success of man as a species. Sometimes, this simple step is forgotten, but scientists remind with recent research that the benefits of this physical activity go beyond the known beneficial effects such as improving cardiovascular health or strengthening muscles and bones .

According to a study from the University of Tuskuba (Japan) , the positive effects of running are so good for mental health that just 10 minutes of a moderate-intensity run increases blood flow to the brain, which helps to improve mood and other fundamental functions of this organ.

The scientists reached this conclusion by analyzing brain activity and areas activated in individuals who had run at at least a moderate pace . After a 10-minute run, they verified its effects both psychologically (the observed subjects revealed that they were in a better mood) and on brain functions that increased pleasure levels.

According to scientific analysis, running involves the activation of neurons in the prefrontal zones, an area in which mood is involved . But the benefits do not end there. For example, the movement required to run engages so many facets of the brain to give the correct coordinated commands to the body that it expands its benefits massively.

"Given the extent of executive control required to coordinate balance, movement and propulsion during running, it stands to reason that greater neural activation occurs in the prefrontal cortex and that other functions in this region benefit from this increased resource. brain cells," explained Professor Hideaki Soya, lead author of the study, in presenting the results.
